What do I need to ride a 50cc scooter?
A 16-year old requires a provisional driving licence which has to be obtained from the DVLC in Swansea. Once this has been received, the rider will need to do a CBT (compulsory basic training) which will allow him or her to ride a 50cc scooter with -plates.
If I drive a car can I ride a scooter without having to take a test?
Yes,if you are 17 or over in possession of a full car driving licence having passed your driving test before February 2001, you are entitled to ride a 50cc scooter without having to display -plates. You are also allowed to carry a pillion passenger. If your driving test was taken after February 2001 you will need to complete the CBT.
Can I ride a scooter larger than 50cc?
Yes, if you are 17 or over, in possession of a full or provisional driving licence, you can ride a scooter up to 125cc. You will however need to complete the CBT (compulsory basic training). Once completed, you will be entitled to ride any scooter or motorcycle up to 125cc whilst displaying -plates.
-plates mean that you are a learner driver and therefore not permitted to carry pillion passengers or ride on motorways.

How cheap are scooters to run?
Very, with the ever increasing cost of fuel, a scooter has got to be one of the cheapest forms of motorised transport available. A 50cc scooter will do between 90-100 miles per gallon. One year Road Fund Licence costs £15 (yes, fifteen pounds!). To fill up the fuel tank will cost about £7. That should keep you going for nearly two weeks!!
Do scooters need regular servicing?
Yes, like any motorised vehicle it is essential that regular servicing is carried out. This is not only to ensure that the scooter gives you many miles of trouble-free riding, but more importantly, to ensure that it is safe to ride and in a roadworthy condition.
Do I have to wear safety clothing?
Yes. By law you must wear a crash helmet displaying European Comformity (EC 2205). All other items of clothing - such as jackets, gloves, etc - are not a legal requirement but are nonetheless important. A good quality biking jacket and motorcycle gloves will increase your protection in the event of an accident. Try to be as visible as possible by wearing clothes that have reflective strips or that are brightly coloured.
